iNala (previously Freedom Communities) is a non-profit company that assists underprivledge communities in Kwadukuza, KZN, to create sustainable small business with the goal of breaking generational cycles of poverty, empowering people to become providers and therefore self-sustaining. We are registered as a Public Benefit Organisation that is able to provide a tax-deductible receipt in recognition of sponsorships and/or donations.
The region has an unemployment rate in excesss of 60% with an alarming number of vulnerable children, unsupported elderly, and youth in need of support to rise above their circumstances. Gender-based violence, alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancies, the riots and the Covid-19 pandemic have excerbated already dire conditions and the poorest of the poor have felt the pain deeply.
Gender Based Violence is a pandemic in our country, and whilst it seems overwhelming, we must tackle it one community at a time. “The way to eat an elephant is one piece at a time”. We work with younger people because this is the age when behaviors are set. “It’s hard to bend an old tree”. In Touch is a Behaviour Change programme that offers an alternative Gender narrative by bringing young people together through social dance and talking with them about PERSONAL SPACE, TRUST and RESPECT between the genders. In Touch targets Grade 6/7 learners because this is the age when they form their long-term foundational behaviours around inter-gender relationships. The programme is closely aligned with the Department of Education’s Life Orientation CAPS Curriculum, which talks about sexuality, relationships, intimacy etc.
